Two months ago my credit card got hacked. It never left my hand and I didn’t use it online. I was puzzled…until I read that there is a technology out there, a phone app, which in the wrong hands can be used to steal sensitive information. It targets cards with RFID chips. It means that someone standing behind me in the supermarket checkout line could be scanning my credit card information without me ever knowing it.
I started looking if there is something on the market that could somehow protect the sensitive information from being scanned. I came across RFID Blocking Credit Card sleeves from ToNic Innovations. The protective sleeve feels sturdy enough and has a special coating inside that suppose to block the RFID signal from transmitting any sensitive information.
Now how do I check if it’s working? My friend lives in an apartment building which uses special entry cards with RFID chips to open the door to the lobby. I asked her to try the RFID Blocking Credit Card sleeve on the entry card.
First we checked if the card worked WITHOUT the sleeve. When I put the card close to the sensor the red light changed to the green and the door opened. Then we put the entry card inside the sleeve and tried it again against the sensor. The sensor light remained red and the door would NOT open. It worked, the signal did NOT go through.
The RFID Blocking Credit Card sleeves came in a pack of 10 and I gave few of them to my family and friends so they can also have some protection from identity theft. I don’t know if it always works against the credit card thieves but to me a piece of mind makes this purchase worthwhile.
